Purchasing Houseplants
Indoor plants are sold by pot size, either gallon proportion (5 gallon container), or pot diameter (6", 8", 10", etc.). The height of the plant is measured from the floor to the top of the foliage (the height of the pot included). The taller plant is not necessarily the more valuable plant. Most of the time the more expensive plant is a slower growing one. Because the grower has these plants longer, more cost is incurred. Expensive plants have had more research and breeding done to produce a hardier more attractive plant.
Production of a large specimine plant is done in an ideal growing environment. Once the plant is moved indoors it's growth rate slows down, the type of growth that a nursery produces is not something we can duplicate in our homes. A plant can be in your house for years before it doubles in size.
Often times the more sought after plants are the ones that drop little fragments of themselves on your furniture and carpeting. If things like that drive you crazy, try to stay away from purchasing Boston and asparagus ferns, and blooming plants.
